The same behavior with Ubuntu 10.04 amd64 and all cd iso flavour (desktop, 
alternate, server).
First observation, I can successfully boot Ubuntu 10.04 i386 version on Dell 
Optiplex 740 with BIOS 1.2.2. Second observation, while bootloader run you can 
press F6 to edit boot options, next if you completely clear all boot options 
you will be able to successfully boot Linux kernel. Clearing kernel options 
instantly lead to kernel panic - no rootfs available, which is expected. If you 
provide any valid kernel boot options (eg. initrd= ...) then you get blank 
screen and boot freeze without any boot messages.
