Regardless of what the root cause turns out to be, you guys really need to switch to libnss-ldapd, which will reliably isolate the user apps from whatever junk is going on inside libldap / gnutls / whatever. (And if you're not using the latest version, which also handles pam_ldap, then you need to update.)
