I tried with no 'splash' option, with 'splash' but without 'nomodeset',
and with 'splash' and with 'nomodeset'. In all three cases I got the
same result: screen flashing on and off, and eventually the start-up
sound.

If I blind-type the right keys to get the computer to shut down, and let
it restart into Windows 7, the screen remains black after Windows starts
up. I have to hibernate and wake the computer for the display to light
up.

I also get the black screen if I use the Live CD's "check disk" option.
