** Description changed:

  I have a Creative X-Fi expresscard.
Sound goes along all right for a while and then suddenly stops. I can
sometimes get it re-started by pushing the card in and out, and then re-booting
the computer (or just re-booting) but sometimes not.
At the same time, alsamixer shows the card properly, and my application
registers that the card is there. But there's no sound.

This is for incoming (recorded) sound. I haven't checked the outgoing
  sound.
