@Daniel: the background here is that we had those exact problems in KDE
4.0 and could trace them down to the phonon backend, that's the first
reason to check.

I understand that the issue is not "keeps audio stack busy" but "doesn't
suspend audio device (while this should happen under normal
circumstances". This might have to do with the behaviour of knotify4
(which I know next to nothing about), but you could ask Olivier Goffart
who's maintaining knotify and should be able to point you to possible
causes.
