I did try that but after installing drivers and rebooting the graphical
environment would not come up so i'd just have a black screen. I also couldn't
swtich to the other terminals (Alt+Ctrl+F1, etc.).
So the proprietary drivers did not work for me.

Subject: [Bug 501203] Re: No sound from Radeon HD 4650 - HDMI Output

I was suffering from exactly the same problem. Identical output
diagnostics. I have a different model of the hp slimline. s5360f. I
had a fresh install of karmic koala. My workaround was to install the
proprietary ATI/AMD FGLRX Video drive. My best guess why this worked is
that the hdmi audio is integrated into this video card. Goto System ->
Administration -> Hardware Drivers. It was the only driver on the list
for me. This is only a workaround, I would prefer not to have to use
proprietary drivers.

Status in “alsa-driver” package in Ubuntu: New

Bug description:
This bug has been automatically assigned to the alsa-driver package based on
instruction provided in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems for
creating a bug but not sure if it is an alsa-driver issue.

This is a fresh install of 9.10 on an HP Slimline s3100e PC with a HD
Radeon 4650 card. I can get video out of HDMI with no problem but I can
not get audio out of HDMI.

aplay -L returns the following:
----------------------
hdmi:CARD=HDMI
    HDA ATI HDMI, ATI HDMI
    HDMI Audio Output
null
Discard all samples (playback) or generate zero samples (capture)
pulse
Playback/recording through the PulseAudio sound server
----------------------------------

However, I noticed in other peoples posting that first line of the the
aplay -L output normally has a DEV=0 at the end. My output does not.
Don't know if this is a problem.

aplay -l (lower case L) shows the following:
-------------------------------
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: HDMI [HDA ATI HDMI], device 3: ATI HDMI [ATI HDMI]
  Subdevices: 0/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
--------------------------------

Also, alsamixer screen displays the following:
-------------------------------------------
Card: HDA ATI HDMI │

------------------------------------------------------

As you can see it is unmuted however, i can not increase the volume
here. It stays at 00.

Some other posting I have seen is creating a file called /etc/asound.conf and
added the following lines:
pcm.!default hdmi:HDMI
pcm.iec958 hdmi:HDMI

Tried it (even rebooted) and it didn't work.

And yet another solution was to created a file called
/etc/modprobe.d/hda_intel.conf and add the following line:
options snd-hda-intel model=auto probe_mask=1

This also did not work (even after reboot).

I'm seriously at a loss here and do not know what else to do. I'm fairly new
to linux (disclaimer).
I have not downloaded any of the proprietary drivers for this card.
I would prefer to stay away from that but if it's the only option then I would
give it a go.
