OK, it should be possible to override the protection (the gamepad claims to require 350mA, which your USB port should be able to supply unless you're using an unpowered hub). When you connect your gamepad, after a couple of seconds run dmesg | tail -n 25 This should show a message such as usb 2-5: rejected 1 configuration due to insufficient available bus power Take the last such message and run echo -n 1 | tee /sys/bus/usb/devices/2-5/bConfigurationValue to force the device to be configured anyway... (Match the 2-5 in the command with the value in the dmesg message.)
