...many, many more people click on the messaging menu in response to a
changed indicator icon, under the impression that they have missed an
instant message. When they open the menu and see (1) contacts they have
actually received messages from, and (2) contacts who have merely
recently signed on, much more confusion is created than the pain
alleviated by placing (2) in the menu in the first place.

Furthermore, in my experience, most people only ever correspond with
fewer than 10% of the contacts in their buddy list (this number is
constantly going down as social networks explode and enable IM), so the
signal-to-noise ratio is already at 1:9.
