"It's a feature, not a bug," I am told :) Indicator applet is showing your recently signed-on buddies for a short period of time so you can quickly send them a message. I've seen no evidence that users find this behavior useful; rather, I've seen more people confused than pleased by it. I suspect that very few people wait for a person to sign-on to an instant messaging service, then immediately send them a message within the first three minutes they are available.
