After several years of relative stability following the widespread
adoption of CUPS, end-user printing in Linux has once again become a
nightmare. The problem is no longer getting the printer to talk to the
computer; it is now a raft of bugs in various page rendering components
that pass output to the printer driver. I see these various problems as
unrelated to one another, but cumulatively they are turning the use of
Linux for me into a trying act of faith rather than a positive
experience. (I say this as someone who has used Linux almost exclusively
for over eight years and has often gone three to six months without
booting into Windows.) You might wish to Google my posts to the
Launchpad bug database, ubuntuforums.org, kubuntuforums.net and the kde-
linux mailing list on some of the individual problems.

This precise problem with overprinting headers and footers is, to the
best of my knowledge, unique to Firefox. Since Firefox, even in Kubuntu,
relies on a certain number of GNOME components and I do not run GNOME,
others will be better than placed than I to determine whether this
problem affects other applications which rely on GNOME print routines.

For the time being, printing in kate is reliable and stable. Alleluia.

The same cannot be said for konqueror. I hope I have this right:
konqueror relies on the renderer in qt 4.6 and qt4.6 is a bug farm. The
one that bites us North American users hardest --- if my amateur
analysis is correct, and it might not be --- is a failure to define the
bottom of the page correctly. The users loses the last 3-4 lines of each
page plus any footer. My guess, and it's only a guess, is that in the
transition of Trolltech (designers of qt) to Nokia ownership, a
reference to the SI A4 paper spec got hardcoded into the print renderer
rather than a reference to the user's printer configuration. John Layt
has put in a lot of work trying to fix these qt bugs; you might also
want to Google some of his work.

I hope this answers your question. Please let me know if it doesn't.
