This has been fixed as part of upstream GNOME #602141 [1,2] which also fixes the invocation of shells that don't understand the "-l" and in the 0.18 release:
* open "$SHELL -" (i..e login shell) in the SSH case * open "$SHELL" (i.e. no login shell) in the local case.
