I found the deciding factor on both the HP-DV4 and Mini9. For Ekiga to hang and use 100%, Ubuntu merely needs to have a bluetooth dongle plugged in. NO pairing needed!
Happens with both laptops... and with 2 different Bluetooth dongles. One of which has no history of pairing on either install.
