This is probably my biggest gripe with Ubuntu at this point. I switched
all my home machines to Ubuntu, and my wife has been mostly okay with
it, but she's had a few gripes...the fact that sound wasn't working for
her was a big one. My workaround has been to make sure that her account
is logged in first so that it can grab the sound device, then I can log
myself in...but it's a true pita that I can't get any sound for my user
as well. I really don't care so much about the "sound keeps playing
even when user not active" vs "sound only plays for currently active
user" (although I think it should be configurable), but "sound only
works for one user period" is a non-starter.
