I don't think you should upgrade grub. At least not yet. As I can see
from your menu.lst file there is no entry for the previous kernel
(2.6.31-14). Is this because you manually edited the file? What is the
content of your '/boot' directory?

Although I don't underestimate the error's significance, I think that
maybe it's not reproducible.
