I tried out the 2.6.32-rc6 based kernel from lucid, no improvement. 2.6.30.9 kernel from mainline ppa disables buttons altogether, and only the pointing stick works for moving.
Someone with more creativity could perhaps guess some combination of kernel + userland which would actually work, but I do not.
