Confirming that the installation of linux-backports-modules-2.6.31-14-generic solved the problem for me. However, iwconfig still shows "Bit Rate=0 kb/s", while network-manager says 9 MBit (2m with line-of-sight from Router). A quick 1 min iperf-test to my desktop-machine (Win7, sorry, for-gaming-only ;-) ) gave me a throughput about 100MBit sending and 60MBit receiving data. So, its running quite well, at least sufficient for me.
