I concur that with MythTV 0.21, changing the output device to
"ALSA:front" (didn't need to do the rest) works fine, but the audio from
the rest of the system halts as previously described.

MythTV 0.22 works with "ALSA:default" as the output device, but audio
from the rest of the system is still freezing. In fact, it gets all
queued up (have a look at all the PulseAudio messages in /dev/shm). When
you quit MythTV, all of a sudden the queue plays all those pending
sounds all at once.

Somehow MythTV just monopolises the audio system in Karmic - completely
blocking out PulseAudio and any other ALSA-using apps such as
MilkyTracker, etc..
