Karmic Koala Beta daily build 20091012 i386 Desktop demonstrates this failure of System Testing (Checkbox) using internal sound system. The problem has to do with integrating Checkbox into the audio path. I say this because I subsequently opened up gnome-sound-recorder 2.28.1 and recorded my voice and played it back audibly using the same settings as the test. On my Dell Latitude C640 laptop I observed the same behaviour with both the internal microphone and also an external microphone.
