The standard cirrus driver works fine - the problem only occurs with vesa. The reason for using vesa is that I can get my native resolution (1680x1050) while cirrus is restricted to 1280x1024.
The workaround for vesa is to either remove the 'splash'-option in grub.cfg or boot the recovery kernel (which does not have this option).
