Have just downloaded Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala 32 bit Alpha 6 - Added Microsoft bluetooth elite mouse/keyboard set. Both came back after sleep without any problem. This was whilst running Live CD. Looks like issue may be fixed in Karmic....?
