ah, whoops - seems I managed somehow to do an invalid test last time; the second queue just popped up again after some USB twiddling.
So let's go with: yes, it still adds the hp: queue. After rmmod usblp and plugging/unplugging the USB cable, it works correctly. No second queue is created, printing to the first queue correctly sends the job to the printer.
