i8042.nodemux is not recognized and appears not to be needed.

Your memory was good.  The only thing I could not figure out was how to
save it from the grub editor.  What i did was edit the menu.lst with out
running update-grub and this seems to work with just i8042.reset added
to the end of the line.

Not sure I have the default set correctly.  This is what I put in:
kopt i8042.reset
and it was removed after running sudo update-grub
 
It is usable again not perfect
