Probably the reporter of this bug reported two different bugs in a single bug report. I think that it should be split into two separate bug reports, the first one regarding that when you use KDM instead of GDM and log in Gnome, fast-user-switch-applet crashes, and the second regarding that trying to switch users from System>Logout>Switch Users with fast-user-switch-applet not running causes X to lock system.
