I have a Vostro 1520 that has the same problem. At first it happened
just once in awhile not it see it might take 4-5 boots to be able to
login. The system though looking like it is frozen I don't think it
really is, if you press the power button the system starts shutting down
and when it remove the GUI screen you can see some of the letters for
the user id that had been typed in. I tried typing the entire user id
and hitting enter to see if it would go to the pw screen but it did not.

This was a clean install of Jaunty amd64 using ext4 for both / & home.
dell 1397 wifi card

Haven't tried switching off the wifi yet.
