I have similar hardware under Feisty (not a Dell though) and have had the same problem in both Edgy and Feisty. Initially my system hibernated correctly, however when I chose the suspend option in Power Manager hibernate began to resume incorrectly.
When I chose the suspend option, the UI prompted stating that suspend may foobar the system. This may be what has happened.
