Can you describe a little more what the setup is - is this your own squashfs configuration, or booting from the live CD? It may be worth while first doing a thorough memory check test to make sure memory corruption is not the root cause. Can you run memtest86+ (from the boot memory, or select "Test Memory" from the Live CD) and let me know if this passes or not.
