@Jason: in the first post you said that "In KDE I have tried to use multiple wireless scanning applications and they are able to find the network", then later you said that "I can't even get the other programs to find the network, or any of the others which I usually detect". Which one is correct? Can you find the network when scanning for it in KDE?
