Hi Runa, thanks for responding.

I just realized that my bug report was listed under firefox 3.0. I don't
actually think that's the problem either, I unintentionally misplaced
the report. I hope I can still get some suggestions though.

I successfully connect using Wicd Manager in Gnome. I have tried the
same program in KDE with no luck. The scenario I described in my first
post was using Wicd Manager. I can't even get the other programs to find
the network, or any of the others which I usually detect.

 I have also tried Wireless LAN Manager kwlan, Wireless Tool Wi-fi
Radar, and SWS Scanner Wireless Network Scanner though I am less
familiar with these programs and they seem a little more involved.
