I can not un-install the offending gedit-plugins package.
I marked the updates I wanted to apply and hit update.
The updating window came up for a short while then errored out "not all changes
or updates succeded".
Like Samuel I am unable to do any updates.
I tried to do a recent update and got the following term.log which i am
attaching.
this is what was in the Terminal:

E: /var/cache/apt/archives/python-problem-report_1.0-0ubuntu5.2_all.deb:
subprocess new pre-removal script returned error exit status 1
