All, I may have solved this issue. I just installed two different kernels, the vanilla "generic" and "server". All exhibit the same behavior as I fist listed above. On a hunch, I went into my bios and set the Video Graphic Mode to "SidePort" instead of "UMA+Sideport" Installing the other kernels put grub back to a default status, and removed my added vga=791.
Now, the machine shuts down properly. Is this a bug with the radeon driver, or some type of memory write issue?
