@Bob Manners & Greenbear: I'm not using ufw or kde. I think that this is not trashing as usually defined, that is moving pages from swap to memory and back. The reason is that the problem happens with either swap on of off. With swap off the problem is less frequent, but there are other problems of performance and stability when almost all memory is used up so I can't recommend turning swap off unless a lot of RAM is available.
If it's not the swap and it's not any process doing IO to the disk, a good candidate is the kernel itself and I'd point out the file system. I'm using ext3. Maybe it gets somewhat confused by the suspend and starts playing back the log or reading in again the buffer cache. Who knows? This bug is still unassigned.
