Hi there! I've upgraded to Ubuntu 9.04 today and also hated to be forced to have those notifications on the top of the screen, even though I have my only panel on the bottom.
I did not want to wait until you may make your decision; so fixed it myself. As I am a C-beginner my solution is too ugly to put online.
