Thanks for spotting that Till. I did wonder but didn't spot anything obvious on that. The udev rule is one needed to allow raw USB devices to be accessed by KVM/QEMU which I've carried since Hardy. Unfortunately the rule is 41-vm-usb.rules which will, as you noticed, cancel out the 40-hplip/rules. I've renamed the vm rule to 39- and the USB printing now works.
