I have this problem. I tried the font choices. The Palatino and Avant- Garde fonts worked, but the others did not.
I am running 6.10 with fluxbox as my window manager. The dpkg- reconfigure/xset trick did no good. I'm one of those academics Patrick mentioned who use xfig a lot. I'm pretty sure that it worked under 6.10 fairly recently. This gives 2 clues to the maintainers.
