I re-installed gsfonts, gsfonts-x11 and gsfonts-other. This had no effect. I restarted the font-server which seemed to have no effect. I restarted X (ctrl-alt-bs) and xfig seemed fine.
Then I rebooted and X came up fine. I think re-installation and rebooting might help. In any case my computer is now doing better.
