Hi Thomas, I'm one of the developers of Autopackage from Germany. Please don't mind some English mistake, I will try my best to explain why Autopackage isn't so bad as you think: First of all, the autopackage support code doesn't need to be installed as root. Users can click the "No password" button to install it locally (to ~/.local). Furthermore we aren't using sudo, but our own program called autosu (we want to switch to PolicyKit for the future btw). This program makes sure that any previous sudo session will be marked invalid so that the password has to be entered again. Furthermore .deb packages which are also being downloaded by many ubuntu users also execute bash scripts as root. Hence there's no real difference between .deb files and .package files. Autopackages are even saver because they don't force you to install anything as root - a possibility .deb packages don't provide.
