I get exactly the same behavior, but it is completely unpredictable
which packages will cause it. Some do; some don't; the existence or
nonexistence of a "changes" description appears to have no effect.
Today I had five available updates; three of them caused the crash,
while two could be clicked normally with no ill effect. Synaptic does
not crash when showing information about the same updates.

My X.org log showed this after a few such crashes:

AUDIT: Thu Jul 13 15:32:11 2006: 6468 X: client 2 rejected from local host
AUDIT: Thu Jul 13 15:32:11 2006: 6468 X: client 4 rejected from local host
AUDIT: Thu Jul 13 15:32:11 2006: 6468 X: client 3 rejected from local host
AUDIT: Thu Jul 13 15:32:11 2006: 6468 X: client 5 rejected from local host
AUDIT: Thu Jul 13 15:32:11 2006: 6468 X: client 3 rejected from local host

There was also a backtrace but it was not logged into the file. My X
session has also switched to VT8 instead of VT7.
