I get exactly the same behavior, but it is completely unpredictable which packages will cause it. Some do; some don't; the existence or nonexistence of a "changes" description appears to have no effect. Today I had five available updates; three of them caused the crash, while two could be clicked normally with no ill effect. Synaptic does not crash when showing information about the same updates.
