hggdh, did you even read the thread? dpkg has everything to do with this issue. In particular, Debian's own custom version of "install-info" (part of the dpkg package) was the problem. That said, I understand Debian's moved to GNU's install-info, and I'm actually surprised that the problem doesn't appear to be fixed in Intrepid. Probably is in Jaunty.
