Also I'm running an IBM T23, and the way I get out of the mess is to hit Cntl-Alt F1
I found many similar problems that were fixed by modifying the acpi-support file. I did not have one of these because I never installed the package "acpi-support" however, after I did, I could still not fix the problem using what people have previously done.
