I would like to add I have this problem also and am on Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid).
It is important to note the problem only occurs when I use the Linux 2.6.28-11 Kernel and the machine freezes every hour without fail (often on any task I am performing, can not pin down just to one). Motherboard voltages and CPU overheating have been ruled out as the temps/voltages Xsensors is stating are all in within the ranges expected and like I say this issue does not occur with Linux Kernel 2.6.27-7 (it only occurs with Linux 2.6.28-11). In addition can also rule out badcaps as I have had the board re-capped. The machine is quite old now and isn't anything spectacular but here are the specs :- A-Bit KT7A v1.3 AMD Athlon XP 2600 1.5 GB Ram 3 Hard Drives (Non-Raid) - 1 x 250 GB (split 75 % ubuntu xfs, 25 % windows xp ntfs), 1 x 160 GB (windows xp ntfs), 1 x 20 GB (windows xp ntfs) ATI Radeon 9250 AGP Card Creative Media Audio PCI Soundcard Compro Digital DVB-TV Capture Card Netgear Fast Ethernet LAN Card 600W Power Supply Hope this helps. Please let me know if you require anything further to investigate this.
