Ok, so these DRI messages are not critical. It checks first if you have
enough memory (so it disables DRI if you are using 1024x768, but goes on
if you have 800x600), then checks what card you have. And with a G100 it
will disable DRI in any case, since it is not supported.

If I understand correctly, with the same xorg.conf:
- startx (after booting with "text") will successfully run an X session with 
the mga server
- gdm (booting without "text") will try the mga driver, fail, and fall back to 
"failsafeX" with vesa driver

Can you please attach /etc/gdm/gdm.conf and gdm.conf-custom so I can
check them?
