I used such an xorg.conf and I get 1440x1...@60hz mode, which has different aspect ratio (and which is not handled well by at least LXDE). There is also mode 1024x...@75hz which is slightly worse rate than with the modelines. If I add a "Display" subsection including "Virtual 1024 768" line (and maybe line "Depth 24") within "Screen" section, I get 1024x...@75hz mode right after startx.
