After a lot of testing it appears that only the original release kernels
work well for me.

8.04 (2.6.24-16), 8.04.1 (2.6.24-19), 8.10 (2.6.27-7) USB transfers go
smoothly as long as I don't update the kernel. Every single kernel
update messes up USB transfers for me. I have tried all of the Intrepid
proposed and Jaunty kernel updates and none of them worked well for me
including the new 2.6.28.x series.

In order to lock down the kernel so you don't see updates in the update
manager, make sure you lock the versions of everything in synaptic
including for versions you don't have installed for the following items.

linux-generic
linux-headers
linux-image
linux-restricted-modules

Once I locked all of these down (both installed and uninstalled), I was
able to do updates without seeing any updates for the kernel.
