After a lot of testing it appears that only the original release kernels work well for me.
8.04 (2.6.24-16), 8.04.1 (2.6.24-19), 8.10 (2.6.27-7) USB transfers go smoothly as long as I don't update the kernel. Every single kernel update messes up USB transfers for me. I have tried all of the Intrepid proposed and Jaunty kernel updates and none of them worked well for me including the new 2.6.28.x series.
