The previous assumption is probably wrong. I traced this with a debugger and this is what seems to happen.
The C# wrappers call gtk_image_set_from_file. This function call succeeds and returns. This causes expose events and all that. The image does get drawn to the screen (it is visible for a split second) and immediately after that the machine resets.
