I tried viewing the picture with with ImageMagick's display and gqview. Neither causes any problems.
Debugging over ssh turned out to be quite difficult. When doing 'tail -f <X.org log>' the computer reboots before anything about the crash gets written to the log. Attaching gdb over ssh is the same: nothing gets written before hard reset. No segfault (or other) info is displayed. I do get a couple of SIGPIPEs during X login but just typing 'cont' is enough to recover.
