I have had the same experience -- with two separate UBUNTU 8.04 installations. I spent considerable time trying to solve the problem. I was unsuccessful. I gave up. I wiped out the UBUNTU installations and installed Windows. I suspect it is a virus. I have recently installed UBUNTU 8.10 on several machines. This is working a lot better than the Frazzled Phoenix. I wouldn't recommend spending much time on this. I would recommend moving up to 8.10.
