sudo /etc/init.d/bluetooth stop sudo mv /var/lib/bluetooth{,.bak} sudo mkdir /var/lib/bluetooth sudo /etc/init.d/bluetooth start This will clear out all existing pairings and settings, but I think it might have sorted some problems out when I was debugging bluez. After doing this, the applet was able to discover new devices.
