Also had the mouse die in the middle of the installation wizard on
Xubuntu Intrepid LiveCD (64-bit) after posting that last comment.

** Summary changed:

- USB optical mouse goes dead after long idle time
+ USB optical mouse goes dead

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-mouse

I have had this happen 3 times now on Intrepid: Once under Gnome and
- twice more under Fluxbox. Problem never occurred under KDE4.

+ occurs under XFCE)

- After being AFK for a long period of time (asleep, at work, etc) the USB
- optical mouse is dead (no light) and does not come back to life without
- a reboot. The keyboard still works, however I cannot ctrl-alt-F* into a
- different session (as I am able to do when the mouse is working). The
- only solution is a system reboot.

I found what seems to be the same (or related) bug in Bug #34066. I have
- just implemented the workaround discussed there.
