After much time spent booting between Gnome, KDE4, and Fluxbox, I can now say that the mouse is dying without a long idle time. In the past week I've had it die 3 times *while* I was using it! I have still only experienced the problem on Gnome and Fluxbox, and not on KDE4 at all. I'm not sure if that's coincidental or relevant.
