Yes, after reading some threads on the Ubuntu Forum, I heard that
adjusting the PCM slider fixed the problem for some.  Although when I
adjust the PCM slider (as well all the others), the distortion does not
go away, it just gets quieter.

Another thing that I noticed is the sound when Ubuntu first starts up
(when you are brought to the long in screen) is fine.  It's after you
log on that you begin to hear the distorted sound.
